Annuities in Tampa
An annuity is a contract with an insurance company: you give them money now and they give you growth, income or both later. The useful ones are straightforward. The agent's job is to show you the terms that matter, the rate, the surrender period and the fees, and to tell you when an annuity is the wrong tool.
When people look at annuities
- You're retiring and want part of your savings out of the market
- A CD is maturing and you want a rate that's locked longer
- You want a monthly check for life on top of Social Security
- You're rolling over a 401(k) or IRA and want a conservative option for part of it
- You inherited money and want it to produce steady income
- A pension buyout left you with a lump sum to manage
Types offered
Fixed annuities
A set interest rate for a set number of years, similar in feel to a CD but issued by an insurer and tax-deferred.
Fixed indexed annuities
Growth tied to an index with a floor against loss and a cap or participation rate on gains. The terms vary widely and are explained line by line.
Immediate income annuities
A lump sum turned into fixed monthly payments for life or a set period, starting within a year.
Deferred income annuities
Payments that start at a future age, often used as longevity protection.
Rollovers and 1035 exchanges
Moving IRA or 401(k) money or an old annuity into a new contract without triggering taxes, when it makes sense to.
How an annuity review goes
- Start with the goal. Growth you can't lose, income starting now, or income starting at a set age. Each points to a different type of contract.
- Check suitability. Florida requires a suitability review before any annuity sale. You'll go over income, assets, liquidity needs and time horizon, and if an annuity isn't suitable, that ends the conversation.
- Compare contracts. Rates, surrender schedules, caps and fees from several carriers, in writing.
- Use the free-look period. Florida gives you time after delivery to cancel for a full refund if you change your mind. The agent makes sure you know the deadline.
What affects the price
- The type of contract and the current rate environment.
- The length of the surrender period, which usually trades a higher rate for less liquidity.
- Riders such as income benefits or enhanced death benefits, which carry fees.
- Your age at the time income starts.
- Whether the money is qualified (IRA) or non-qualified.
You see the premium and what the plan covers in writing before you apply. The insurer sets the rate and makes the final decision on your application.
Annuities for Florida retirees
Florida has no state income tax, which makes the tax deferral inside an annuity a smaller advantage here than it is up north, and that should be part of the math. What Florida does have is a large population living on savings and Social Security, and a hurricane season that argues for keeping a real cash reserve outside any contract with a surrender period. Florida also has specific consumer protections on annuity sales to people 65 and older, including suitability requirements and limits on surrender charges, and the agent follows them. This site does not give investment advice; variable annuities are securities and are only offered by an agent who also holds the required securities registration.
Common questions
Are annuities safe?
Fixed and indexed annuities are backed by the insurer's claims-paying ability, and Florida has a guaranty association that covers contracts up to set limits if an insurer fails. Variable annuities carry market risk. You'll see which type you're looking at and what backs it.
What is a surrender period?
A number of years during which withdrawing more than the allowed amount costs a penalty. Shorter surrender periods usually mean lower rates. Pick one that leaves you enough liquid money elsewhere.
Can I lose money in an indexed annuity?
Not from market declines; the floor is usually zero. You can earn less than expected because of caps and participation rates, and surrender charges apply if you take money out early.
Is an annuity right for all of my savings?
Almost never. It's one tool for part of a retirement plan. The suitability review is designed to keep the amount reasonable.
